How to Use the SmallBiz Theme Facebook App on a Subdomain

Eileen Lonergan 9th September 2011

Instead of building a site on a sub domain, you will need to build it in a folder to comply with SSL requirements which Facebook will be implementing on October 1, 2011. If you have already built the site on a sub domain, this post will show you how to move the site to a folder without redoing all of your work. You may follow the steps below, but use this post first, How to Create a File on Bluehost, which will help you create a file in Bluehost, on which you may install the SmallBiz theme and utilize the Facebook App.

I am frequently asked if it is possible to you the SmallBiz Facebook Application WITHOUT actually using the SmallBiz Theme to build a WordPress website.

The answer is YES! To do this, create a subdomain within your hosting account (ie Facebook.EileenLonergan.com), install the theme on this url and create your mini website for Facebook.

I have created a video which will walk you through the steps. I use BlueHost.com for my hosting, which I highly recommend. They are compatible with WordPress, easy to use, and have a 24/7 support line :)

This process really does take less than 5 minutes to install. I want to remind you to to select one of the Facebook Templates when you create your Facebook Pages. Also, visit the Dashboard >Small Biz Options > Facebook App which has a great video explaining how to activate the App in your Facebook Pages.

Process:

1. Create a subdomain on BlueHost (a sub domain is free) using my primary url (eileenlonergan.com), so I now have something like this FacebookApp.EileenLonergan.com

2. I then installed WordPress + the Small Biz theme on that new url (FacebookApp.EileenLonergan.com)

3. I then built my Facebook Pages (remember to select Facebook as the layout when you are publishing the pages)

4. Set up the custom menu

5. Activate the App in the Small Biz Options panel

6. You may still customize the menu bar colors & put the Privacy settings on Private

Here is a sample of the customized pages that I have built, most of them are with the Small Biz App.
