My Take Away from the Steve Jobs Book
Eileen Lonergan 13th February 2012
Like many of you, I have recently read Walter Isaacson’s book Steve Jobs. As I was reading and during the few weeks since completion, I have been asking myself, “what lessons can I use in my own business”? The book isn’t a How To, or guide which offers a road map of strategies, yet Jobs accomplishments are so vast, clearly there are elements that I can apply to my own business.
My number one take away: Care about the parts no one actually sees. Jobs was just as obsessed with the interior layout and design of the computer as the outside.
I feel that I bring this attitude to the websites that I design:
- Each page, post, and image is tagged for seo.
- I only use high quality premium themes.
- I create sitemaps and submit them to search engines.
- I use plugins sparely, only when I know that the benefit of their added functionality far outweighs not using them.
- I set up analytics tracking and examine who my visitors are, what they like and what isn’t working.
- I care.
Obviously I am no Steve Jobs, yet I sincerely admire his accomplishments and I am a big fan of his products. Have you read the book? I am curious to know your thoughts.

Hi Eileen,
That lesson really jumped out when I read the book too. The idea that he paid attention to even the “back of the cabinet” – the parts that no one sees.
I like how you’ve translated this to your work – I’ve seen it and it is top-notch!
